Golden Oldies Basketball
We are delighted to introduce Steve ‘Coach’ McKean as a 2018 Golden Oldies World Basketball Festival ambassador.
Steve ‘Coach’ McKean has dedicated his life to basketball. Described as being the face, voice and name of basketball in New Zealand during the 1970s and 1980s, ‘Coach’ McKean’s was synonymous with the game as a coach, mentor and commentator.
Among the many highlights and achievements in a long a distinguished career, one of the most significant came in 1978 when he coached the New Zealand basketball team to its first ever win over Australia.
‘Coach’ McKean started his career in New Zealand more than 45 years ago, firstly with the Coca-Cola Basketball Club before taking up a contract as a player/coach for Auckland club Panmure. Success followed with his appointment as national coach for four years before relinquishing the role to move to New Plymouth where he continued coaching at national league level, becoming the coach of the first team in the National Basketball League to win 100 games.
Accolades, formal and informal, have been heaped upon ‘Coach’ McKean including New Zealand Basketball Coach of the Year in 1978 and 2002, recipient of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2012 for his services to sport and the 2016 New Zealand Sport and Recreation Lifetime Achievement Award.
For more than twenty years, ‘Coach’ McKean was involved with secondary schools sport as a Regional Sports Director for Sport Taranaki and secondary schools sport co-ordinator. He says he is excited to be involved with Golden Oldies Basketball as it provides a fantastic opportunity to pursue his passion for the sport with basketballers at the other end of the age spectrum.
“Basketball is a sport which lends itself extremely well to girls, boys, men and women of all ages whether they want to play in a fiercely competitive environment or, like Golden Oldies Basketball, in a festival that offers an opportunity to hit the boards with players from home and abroad simply for the love of the game.”
‘Coach’ McKean will be at the Christchurch Golden Oldies World Basketball Festival in Christchurch from 1 to 8 April 2018 and is considering this participation options. “I might put together an ‘All Stars’ team and hit the courts as either a coach or player. Whatever form my involvement takes you can be assured it will be with the one eye on the fun and friendship on and off the courts.”
